All our trading policies aim to maximise productivity from the resources we use, while minimising waste leaving as small an environmental footprint as we can. For example, all waste wood is recycled, all sawdust and shavings are used by a local farmer etc etc.
All our warehousing uses low energy lighting which is powered solely by green electricity from 100% renewable resources. Heating to offices and showroom is via low energy underfloor heating We use only recycled paper - we use both sides of this and then shred it for use in packaging.
All stocks of new European and North American Hardwoods are purchased as far as genuinely ascertainable from sustainable sources. This is to say that timber is only purchased from managed forests where, as trees are harvested, new trees are replanted. We do not trade in new/virgin rainforest timber products. We try to minimise "floor miles", so concentrate on timbers from Europe with some from North America/Canada, and nearly all of our production is carried out in Europe or the UK.

Much of the timber that we reprocess
is from non- renewable resources (at least not in our lifetime). We attempt
to make best use of reclaimed timber, whether this be old flooring or
beams etc, and as far as possible recycle by-products of the reclaiming
process (sawdust, shavings etc).
As
part of our commitment to best use of reclaimed materials, we subscribe to
the Salvo Code . The
code aim has been to give buyers confidence that items they buy have not been
stolen or removed from listed or protected buildings without permission.
When you purchase a stock item floor from us, if you order too much, we are happy for you to return what you do not use to us. Boards must be returned within one month of receipt by you, and be in the same condition as when they left us. If packaged in packs, please keep packaging intact. Minimum return is 1m2
Our showroom and offices were primarily built using reclaimed timber for the timber frame contruction, roof and floor joists and wall panelling. Toilets are fitted with low flush mechanisms, and all printer cartridges are recycled. Nearly all of our power usage is generated by our array of solar panels on our warehouse rooves. Any energy which we use that we do not generate ourselves comes from Ecotricity, one of our partner organisations.
At Chauncey's, we are committed to managing our environmental impact by implementing an Environmental Management System.
As part of our commitment to recycling, we try to use as much recycled packaging as possible. To this end, we use recycled plywood which has previously been used for photo/film set production (bought via Bristol Wood Recycling Project: www.bwrp.org.uk ). Polystyrene packers, where used, are from production offcut waste (via CS Manufacturing, located next to us in Bristol).
While this recycled packaging might not be as smart as new, we hope that you will agree with us that it is a worthwhile idea.
STAFF TRAINING: We endeavour to ensure that all of our staff are trained in (and comply with) all of our environmental policies.
WE WELCOME YOUR FEEDBACK: We would not claim to be foolproof when it comes to green initiatives,
but we try. We are continually updating and reassessing our policies by
way of an ongoing environmental audit. Our environmental policy has a
direct influence on our business and is used to set objectives for continual
improvement of our environmental performance. Our environmental policy
is under constant review.
If you have any good ideas about how we can do more, please email us your
comments, and we will be pleased to get back to you.
