SECRET NAILING: Fixing the boards with nails through the tongue at an angle (usually 45-47degree) so no fixing is seen once the floor is laid. Can be done by hand but with many hardwoods piloting (pre-drilling) may be required, especially near the ends of boards. An easier and quicker method is to use a mechanical nailer (eg. Porta-nailer, Powernailer or compressed air gun) |
SURFACE FIXING: NAILING: May be with countersunk nails that are then punched in and filled or flooring brads which are left exposed as a feature. To joists or deck. SCREW DOWN: Boards may be screwed with screw head a few mm below surface. This hole can then be plugged with matching wooden pellet which is then sanded flush. |
GLUE DOWN: Boards are fixed down directly to subfloor with appropriate adhesive. Try hovering over specific glue icon on chart for type of glue recommended. Commonly Sikabond glues - may be applied by applicator or trowel depending on application. SUB-FLOOR MUST BE DRY |
GLUE DOWN: Boards are fixed down directly to subfloor screed with or without underfloor heating incorporated. see other pages for more information on fitting over underfloor heating. SUB-FLOOR MUST BE DRY |
FLOATING FLOOR: For Chauncey's Tectonic or other engineered boards. Floating floors are fitted by glueing the T/G joint with a good quality PVA adhesive to form a "skin" which "floats" over the supporting sub-floor. SUB-FLOOR MUST BE DRY |
